How I fixed iPod Shuffle (2nd Gen) Error 1418
…or how I bought an iPod without technically buying one.
Here he is:
I’m still all about internet how-to’s lately – knowledge is power, as they say.
This time I wont do in vlog format, after being criticised by every man and his internet-enabled dog for my last attempt.
Hmmmpf.
Sidebar: I am still opposed to iPods in general, the circumstances in which I acquired this irresistibly cute blue Shuffle are complicated and boring. Most importantly, I didn’t buy it directly for myself, which still allows me to maintain my long-standing and highly-sane iBoycot.
Anyway, after I synced it at work, then tried to install it again at home, I got the infamous ‘1418 error‘. Super informative error message there Apple….
Here’s what I did to fix the error, when the standard ‘resetting’ options didn’t work: (took me a few hours to figure it out, so thought I would make a to-do)
- Download and install CCleaner
- Close iTunes and run CCleaner to fix any errors in your registry. While you’re there you may as well run the other clean-up options the program offers.
- Connect your 2nd gen shuffle without loading iTunes.
- Hopefully you will see the iPod mounted as a hard drive in My Computer. Right click on it and select Format.
- I both the quick and the short format (after trying just one didnt work in the next steps)
- Start iTunes, with Shuffle out of the dock.
- Dock that thing, leave the default name for the iPod as is for the time being.
- Let iTunes autofill the Shuffle with your music and don’t interrupt the first full sync
- Eject and re-dock
- Change name and other settings as you please
So there we go, fairly simple but worked for me. I think the main thing is to not interrupt the first full sync, the other things are more or less housekeeping items, but it wasnt untill I did all of them in this sequence that the error message went away and the iPod was recognised and sucessfully synced.
Now I can happily join the great iPodded throng!

Never one to pass up a compliment, Edwin said
“you are the beast thank you very much, deberias(?) to work in Apple, so that it looks for full and nothing but your you hit the nail”
..according to my os x translation widget anyway. Happy shuffling Edwin, I still use mine all the time. Great little gadget – perfect for the gym.

Thank God, I couldn’t figure out what was up with my girlfriend’s purple one, I tried everything, including Apple’s iPod Cleaner tool or whatever specifically for the Shuffles. Personally myself I own a Zen Vision M, and my girlfriend won it in a raffle, just so you know you’re not alone in the iBoycot. ;D

Sucesss! I didn’t do it Ryan’s way but he inspired me. Thanks.
I have a 2nd generation shuffle and it was badly behaving.
Here is what I did after many failed attempts with the 1418 error.
1. Download the Ipod Reset Utililty from apple.
2. Follow the instructions to reset the ipod. Basically you unplug the IPOD From the computer, run the utility, then when prompted plug in the IPOD. Click the button to reset, wait then when it tells you it is done, click the “X” to close the utility. Itunes will automatically try to open, but when it does close it.
3. Go to my computer, and right click on the IPOD. Select format. Format it it regular, then quick. No particular reason to do both. I also ran the disk repair option by right clicking on the IPOD and choosing properties, then tools, then disk error checking (check now). I choose “scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors”
4. When done you must right click on the Ipod icon from the my computer window and select “eject”. Now close My computer window.
5. Unplug IPOD from computer. Then plug back in allow itunes to load, but don’t select anything yet.
6. Itunes will prompt you to accept a name for you IPOD do not click or do anything to this window and do not close ITUNES.
7. You can use your mouse to choose any one of your playlists. Choose the one you want to load on your ipod.
8. Choose all the songs you want to load on ipod, they should be highligted when selected.
9. Right click on the highlighted songs and choose “add to playlist” this will give you a number of different places to copy the songs. Choose your IPOD and they will all load into your ipod. Look at your Device Catagory and notice your IPOD has the little the circular arrow icon showing download activity. The top most window in itunes will also show each song as it loads. “DO NOT TRY TO CLICK ON THE IPOD YET! Let the songs all load. and DO NOT TRY TO CHANGE THE NAME OF YOUR IPOD.
I got all my songs to load and now my ipod works after many hours. After it was done I changed the name, and ITUNES Freezes if I try to load or delete a song to the IPOD playlist in the normal way.
Hope this helps others. Thanks to ryan for this website

Thank you for saving me from days of fruitless aggravation, followed by the always inevitable trip to the Apple store to buy a new shuffle!
Cannot resist: New iPod Shuffle with personal engraving from your ex-wife, $50; Time wasted trying to fix the darned thing on your own, $300 (at least); Frank Sinatra (autofill’s first song) on your re-animated shuffle… you know how it goes
