Continuing my recent love-affair with all-things-Dutch, I recently got around to looking up (aka illegally downloading) a song I have heard on the radio a few times, but could not quite place.
Much to my surprise (because it is in English, not because I actually liked it), the song is from a Dutch artist, by the name of Anouk.
I have either heard this song before somwhere, on TV perhaps, or it sounds a lot like another song that I just can’t figure out at this stage. It’s definitely my favorite track from the album and I’m sure it would be a success in Australia. She could really use a decent stylist however - its not 1997 any more honey - the Sporty Spice look is over. For the record, she is apparently not a lesbian. I guess my Lesdar needs some fine-tuning.
I had to laugh, mockingly, when I read that Wikipedia entry for the album this song came from. As a back story, the Netherlands usually is so proud to be oblivious to American, trends, culture and influence, but check this out:
“Girl”, the first single released from the album, became the best-performing single ever for a female artist in the Netherlands, despite the fact it never topped the Dutch Top 40. With this record, she beats Céline Dion with “My Heart Will Go On“, who kept the number one position for best selling female single for a long time, and Britney Spears‘ “…Baby One More Time“, which was number 2 and now #3 best-performing female single in the Netherlands.
‘My heart will go on’ and ‘…Baby one more time’ are (or were) the top selling female singles OF ALL TIME in the Netherlands???
Puhlease!! MHWGO is even too lame for my tastes. And for me to reject a Celine Dion power-ballad, well, it took me a long time to come to terms with and really forced to me to evaluate who I am and what I stand for.
So say goodbye to your alternative, edgy, passionately-non-US-based image, NL! When is Amsterdam Disney opening?
[Unrelated, but I updated my Wordpress software tonight; the history scrolling thing above now works - with a cool month-timeline thing, give it a go]
